When rings are discussed it usually concerns the top ring only. Chrome has good resistance to scuff but does not exhibit moly s oil retention capabilities. As a result an economy ring set will likely require replacement in 50 000 to 60 000 miles compared to the 100 000 plus mile. But all top rings are cast iron either plain or ductile.

Moly has a very high resistance to scuff. The ring seating process is accomplished by actual metal to metal contact between the ring and the cylinder wall. As a result sometimes moly rings are a replacement for oem chrome faced rings. And the aterials typically used are cast iron moly chrome or ceramic.

The ring s job is to seal all the gases it can on the top side of the piston from escaping to the bottom side of the piston and into the crankcase. Economy ring sets typically feature the same material formulations and designs as premium ring but do not have ring face coatings. Plain cast iron is a durable wear surface in normal operating conditions and is less costly than the moly or chrome faced ring.
